DESCRIPTION:
The pinstripe calathea, or calathea ornata. is a highlv ornamental plant that makes a striking addition to a houseplant collection. As part of the prayer plant family, it is known to close its leaves at night, and then unfolds when the sun comes out. It’s an interesting sight to see.
This stunning plant with its' dark glossy leaves and perfect pinstripes that shift from baby pink to white as they mature is sought after for good reason. Completely unique in it's rich coloring and captivating with its' graceful form this plant makes an exotic statement piece. This is a popular plant shows its striking pink veins along the leaves and red to almost burgundy color on the back side of leaves.
LIGHT:
Calathea plants need at least 8 to 10 hours of bright, indirect light with 8 hours of darkness for optimal growth. Although they can grow in low light conditions, the plants cannot tolerate direct sunlight. Calathea needs sunlight for photosynthesis and produces energy for growth, but too much direct sunlight exposure will burn their leaves.
WATER:
With Calathea plants, you do not want the soil to dry out completely or be oversaturated. Your princess is not drought-tolerant foliage, but the potting soil needs to dry out a bit between watering. Doing this helps prevent the growth of mold and fungus.
If you notice that your calathea plant has developed brown, crispy leaves, it is likely due to a lack of humidity and moisture. While this can also signal a sensitivity to fluoride or other chemicals in your water, it is more likely that you are simply not watering enough. To rule out the possibility of tap water chemicals causing the browning, simply use distilled water for a few weeks. This will help you make sure this is not the case.
Calathea Ornata should be watered about once a week during spring and fall, but you will need to water it more often in hotter weather. Overwatering is one of the leading causes of death for this plant which can cause leaf damage and root rot.
SOIL:
When potting or repotting your calathea ornata plant, add a peat-based potting mix to your pot first. A good blend is one that is two parts peat and one part perlite. Invest in good potting soil that will drain easily, as this will help your plant thrive and develop strong, healthy roots.
Calathea thrives in well-draining, aerated soil with a pH of 6.5. The soil mix also require to have appropriate water retention and nutrient needs for it to grow to their full potential.
TEMPERATURE:
The ideal temperature range for Calathea Ornata plants is 65°F to 80°F (18° – 27°C). The plants thrive in medium to low light and keep plants out of direct sunlight.
As location plays a big role, as seen with the right place, it helps provide your princess with the right temperature.
HUMIDITY:
Your Calathea Ornata Pinstripe loves plenty of humidity. For adequate moisture levels, you can mist her twice a week using room temperature water. The best place for this houseplant is in your bathroom or kitchen, with bright indirect light.
REPOTTING:
Repot your Calathea only when rootbound and avoid disrupting the rootball unless essential. Repot in early spring, increase the pot size by only 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm), and use a well-draining potting mix. Add fresh mix around the plant in the new pot and water lightly after repotting.
The Pinstripe plant is a princess, you must agree, as it does not like repotting. You only need to do this when the roots have grown through the drainage holes every two years. Please make sure the pot is one size bigger than it is in.
FERTILIZER:
The Calathea ornata does not require fertilizer to grow, but it is best to fertilize every two to three months. The Calathea ornata does not like fertilizer that has too much nitrogen. Therefore, it is better to use a fertilizer with low nitrogen levels, and it’s best to fertilize in the spring or fall.
