Description

Alocasia Polly African Plant | African Mask Plant | Amazonica Polly | Amazonian Elephant Ear | Amazon Shield African Mask | Alocasia Plant

What do you get: A large beautiful full plant with lush big leaves same as the pot in the image in a 6" nursery pot.

DESCRIPTION:
This Alocasia has impressive and stunning leaves. Along with its “polly” nickname, the plant is also commonly called polly African mask, shield, elephant's ear or taro. Alocasia Polly is a stunning tropical plant characterized by its leaves shaped like arrows. As a tropical plant, it is the happiest when placed somewhere warm and humid but not directly under the sun. This plant also likes to be kept moist but not soggy. Alocasia Polly is native to the South Pacific, particularly in the Philippines. Taking care of it is of medium difficulty, so it needs just a bit of attention to thrive.

SOIL:
The Alocasia Polly requires optimal soil conditions in order to thrive. It needs to be able to maintain moisture within the soil. t is found in tropical or sub-tropical moist environments to be precise. So, you’ll need to either buy or create something that replicates this.
The soil used for the plant can be mixed with coco peat or mossy peat that allows moisture and sufficient excess water to be stored. The peat would also provide oxygenation and protection for the roots against rotting. The plant loves a good space for it to grow well and tall.

LIGHT:
The African mask prefers indirect sunlight exposure, and it does not actually need several hours of exposure. The African mask can be best placed in places such as windows or areas where it can receive indirect light.
Provide bright indirect light coming from an east-, west or north-facing window. Direct summer sunlight should generally be avoided as this will cause the leaves to burn. You should keep your leafy friend in a shaded spot.

TEMPERATURE:
The temperature requirement of the African mask plant is the same temperature as a subtropical or a tropical temperature. The African mask plant can survive a room temperature. However, the plant should be avoided in a too cold place to prevent the plant from being inactive or stunted in growth. The plant cannot tolerate a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius below.
The best temperature for an Alocasia Polly lies between 64-79°F (18-26°C).

HUMIDITY:
The humidity requirement of the plant is essential for the gardeners to take note of. The plant loves to be in a place where the humidity is too high.
It is important to remember that the required humidity should not go down as it can significantly help the plant’s growth. Another way to increase the humidity level is through the use of a pebble tray filled with water.

FERTILIZER:
Please note that when it has been re-potted, planted, or purchased recently, the plant should not be fertilized within a year. This will give time for the plant to grow on its own.
During wintertime, avoid giving any fertilizer to the plant. The plant needs no fertilizer during the said period.
During summer or springtime, you may fertilize the plant for once.

WATER:
In terms of watering your Elephant’s Ear plant, this means that you should make sure that the soil is constantly moist. On top of that, misting your plant on a regular basis is recommended.
Water regularly and consistently. The Alocasia Polly likes to be kept in a moist environment but NOT soggy.
The plant loves dampness but is not a fan of too much water. Overwatering is discouraged with this plant to avoid root rot. So make sure to feed them water when they needed it.
It is better to use either rainwater, distilled water, or filtered water to make sure your plant thrives as expected.

POTTING:
Every two or three years, the Alocasia should be re-potted. In these years, the plant’s roots have started to outgrow Alocasia. Upon re-potting the plant, please make sure to purchase another pot with slightly bigger space enough for the roots not to become bound. Do not purchase a pot with a bigger space than the former; the plant cannot usually survive on that kind of space.

GROWTH:
Alocasia Polly can grow up to about 20 inches tall and wide. It is important to remember that the plant grows at an average pace, and it does not need fertilizer to achieve that one.
